ICP-MS Heavy Metal Testing

GRP detects and quantifies trace elemental contaminants in peptide samples using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). This highly sensitive analysis identifies heavy metals and other elemental impurities that may be introduced during manufacturing, purification, or handling processes.
ICP-MS Heavy Metal Testing
ICP-MS stands for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. It is considered the industry gold standard for detecting and quantifying trace metal contaminants at extremely low concentrations, often down to parts-per-billion (ppb) levels.
For peptide products, ICP-MS testing is used to identify potentially harmful elemental impurities that may enter the manufacturing process through:
- Raw materials
- Synthesis reagents and catalysts
- Water used during production
- Manufacturing equipment and containers
- Purification processes
Common metals screened include:
- Lead (Pb)
- Arsenic (As)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Nickel (Ni)
- Chromium (Cr)
- Cobalt (Co)
- Copper (Cu)
- Zinc (Zn)
These contaminants are not detected by purity tests such as HPLC and require dedicated elemental analysis.
ICP-MS technology provides exceptional sensitivity, allowing for the detection of contaminants at very low concentrations. The analysis helps verify product quality, evaluate manufacturing consistency, and provide confidence in the overall cleanliness of peptide materials. Unlike purity or identity testing, ICP-MS specifically targets inorganic contaminants that cannot be detected through HPLC, LC-MS, or endotoxin assays.
Sample Requirements
- Required sample type: Lyophilized peptide powder or peptide solution
- Preferred sample quantity: 5 to 10 mg
- Minimum sample quantity: 1 to 2 mg
Testing Disclaimer
ICP-MS Heavy Metal Testing evaluates elemental impurities and heavy metal contamination only. This analysis does not assess peptide purity, molecular identity, endotoxin levels, sterility, potency, biological activity, or product efficacy. Results apply exclusively to the submitted sample tested under laboratory conditions.
